Abstract
Objectives: A study was conducted for investigating the incidence and related factors of low back pain.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with questionnair in a steel factory in September, 1997. And, I selected 988 workers who had never complained of low back pain as cohorts. I follow up survey for 1 year about occurrence and characteristics of low back pain in this cohorts. Follow-ups were done for 816 workers.

Results: 1. The number of occurred low back pain for 1 year were 171. So Incidence was 21.1 persons/ 100 persons. 2. In univariate analysis, past history of low back pain, posture of waist, satisfaction to
job and lifting of heavy materials showed a statistical significance. 3. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, past history of low back pain, satisfaction to job and lifting of heavy materials were significantly related factors for low back pain. And relative risks for this variables were 2.85(95% CI ; 1.96-4.14), 1.54(95% CI ; 1.02-2.31), 1.74(95% CI ; 1.21-2.51).

Conclusion: This study suggests that past history of low back pain, satisfaction to job and lifting of heavy materials can contribute to the increase in low back pain. Therefore, management for workers with past history of low back pain, education about material handling technic and automation for material transportation system have a impact on prevention of the low back pain.
